The Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy congratulates Katharina Crepaz, PhD, for being awarded the "Friedwart Bruckhaus-Förderpreis" of the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation. Crepaz who is a scientist of the Max Planck Fellow-Group receives the prize for her article "Unabhängigkeitsbewegungen in der EU: Differenzierte Integration und ,Europa der Regionen' als Gegenmodell?", published in the book "Der Anfang vom Ende? Formen differenzierter Integration und ihre Konsequenzen". In this article Crepaz analyzes the need for reform within European Institutions against the background of a subsidiary political approach. Keynote speaker Rupert Scholz, former federal minister, commended Crepaz for her constructive approach, which provides important impulses for more regional self-government within the EU. The Department for Social Law at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy has started working on a new project on migration. In cooperation with the University of California, Davis, the scientists will be conducting research on the regulations with which countries react to migration. On the one hand, they are especially interested in how the law constructs certain groups of people, e.g. persons entitled to asylum or those who are tolerated. On the other hand, the project will shine a light on the social protection laws that are connected to a specific status. Besides the USA and Germany, Sweden, Italy and Greece will be factored into the comparison. Furthermore, the experiences of African countries will be taken into account.
