Mentale und physische Gesundheit im Alter. Der Einfluss von Armut, Einkommensungleichheit und Vermögensungleichheit

The correlation of income and health has often been documented. The causality appears to operate in both directions. High income helps to keep you healthy, and healthy people are more likely to achieve higher positions in their job and hence higher income.

Longitudinal data of people age 50 and older from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) is used to analyze the effects on health of slipping into and out of poverty in old age. Short term effects on different health outcomes such as subjective health and depression is examined. In addition macro indicators for inequality in income and wealth are used to explain country differences in the poverty-health relation.

This project resulted in a dissertation that was published as open access monograph in 2020.
