Workshop on the Social Protection of Crisis Migrants
In cooperation with the University of California, Davis, the Department for Social Law at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy will organize a workshop on Crisis Migration in the spring of 2017. Legal researchers will present the results of their studies on the social protection of “crisis migrants” – those for whom crisis is the cause of migration, although they do not qualify for refugee protection. Of particular interest is how different regions and states provide for the social rights of migrants who have peculiar immigration statuses. The findings compare the various legal approaches used in Africa, Europe, Latin America and the United States. Complementary contributions will shed light on both the historical and political dimensions of crisis migration. Policy implications and directions for the future will be discussed. The workshop will take place on March 17th, 2017 in Davis, California.
